Research and Development: An Interview With Aurora Innovations

Scientist hands testing soil

At Left Coast Wholesale, we believe the best cultivation products come from research, testing, and experience. That’s why we are very excited to announce our partnership with Aurora Innovations, allowing us to provide your customers with their Roots Organics and Soul lines of liquid nutrients.

Founded in Eugene, Oregon by a group of organic gardeners, Aurora Innovations’ mission is to turn the world’s finest ingredients into the most beneficial and sustainable soils and nutrients. Their state-of-the-art laboratory, test farms, and in-house sources for base elements like peat and perlite make them an ideal partner in our efforts to offer a curated collection of the best cultivation products on the market.

We wanted to share their story with you, so we reached out to Aurora Innovations to ask them about their approach to researching and developing their high-quality growing products.

Left Coast Wholesale: How would you describe the Aurora Innovations philosophy to someone who may be hearing about the company for the first time?

Aurora Innovations: Our goal is to provide our customers with products containing high-quality ingredients to cultivate superior plants that yield more, have higher resin and terpene production, and enjoy overall better health. We are proud to have one of the largest selections of certified organic plant nutrients on the market.

How did you manage to grow from a small group of organic gardeners in Eugene, Oregon to a cultivation industry leader?

We had a vision over 20 years ago to make organic growing easier and more accessible. We base our products on the best ingredients and sometimes even create and manufacture the raw ingredients that go into our soils and nutrients to ensure a high level of quality and consistency.

What makes Aurora Innovations stand out from other manufacturers of nutrients and soils?

We are a family-owned company that is passionate about the cultivation community, and we have been involved in this industry since the beginning. This allows us to not only be at the forefront of recent trends but actually create them. We manufacture all of our products in-house, from our dry and liquid nutrients to all of our soils using only the highest quality ingredients, which creates a better end product.

What are some of the benefits of growing with organic products, and why should cultivators consider them over conventional alternatives?

The health benefits of organic growing are not only for the consumer but the plant as well. Plants that are stronger and healthier are less susceptible to pests and disease. The taste and quality of the end product are far superior when grown organically.

How would you describe the various applications and benefits of liquid nutrients vs. dry nutrients?

Liquids often have a much faster uptake, while dry nutrients have a slower release rate. There are so many different cultivating styles. At Aurora, we like to create products that allow consumers to implement them into their unique programs.

We recently created our Terp Tea line (a dry nutrient) containing micronized organics. This makes it different from most dry nutrients because the uptake is very fast and can be mixed in water like the liquids or top dressed.

What results can growers expect after adding your nutrients to their gardens?

They can expect healthy, happy plants that produce high-quality flowers. They will also see consistency in our products and feel confident in feeding their plants.

With such a varied range of products, how should cultivators determine which of your nutrients are best for their growing environment?

We have several feeding schedules, and typically one of them can be tailored to fit any gardener’s current program.

What is your approach to researching and developing new products, both in the lab and in your test gardens?

If we see a lack of something in the market, we try and fill the gap with a solution. We have test greenhouses on-site and a fully integrated state-of-the-art lab allowing us to take samples of soil and tissue and run tests to determine whether our product is working optimally. Once we get a product past the point of an internal review, we have several tester clients who will use them and give us feedback before public release.

How do you view Aurora’s role in the growing community and the cultivation industry?

We are very active and involved. We love hearing from our customers through social media and out on the road with our sales representatives!

What impact do you hope to make on the growing community?

Our goal is to get people off of synthetic nutrients or at least integrate organics into their garden so they can see the benefits of what it can do. We feel like this is a positive impact on the planet as well as the community.

Any exciting new plans for 2021 that you would like to share?

We are constantly expanding and working on creating new things! We feel as though we can always do more and be better, so expect to see a lot out of us in 2021!
